You can climb the 857 steps to the Venetian Fortress of Palamidi and take in the breathtaking views. If you want to relax and lounge around, you can enjoy a drink in any of the tavernas that line the waterfront. Nafplion also serves as a comfortable base from where you can explore the archaeological sites of the Peloponnese.
  • Olympia:
    Olympia is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place gifted the world the Olympic Games. Even today, the Olympic flame of the modern-day Olympic Games is lit by reflection of sunlight in a parabolic mirror at the restored Olympia stadium and then transported by a torch to the place where the games are held.

The site is still a recognizable complex of temples, priest dwellings and public buildings. The ancient sites associated with the games are worth exploring. See the ruins of a gymnasium that dates back to second century. Another place of interest is the palaestra, or the wrestling school.

If you are in Peloponnese, you must sample the fresh seafood such as lobster, shrimp and octopus. In Kalamata, you cannot afford to miss the world famous Kalamata olives. If you are in Sparta you simply must try the Vardainiotika, a local dish of chicken stuffed with cheese, olives and walnuts.
