Mykonos Holiday Villas and Travel Guide

Mykonos is considered to be one of the most sophisticated, fashionable and expensive destinations in Greece. Despite its designer shops, colourful tavernas, pulsating dance clubs and nudist beaches, it still retains its traditional flavour which can be savoured in the trademark five thatched windmills turning slowly on the hill.

Mykonos is particularly favoured by the gay travellers; however, it also has much to offer families and kids. Those interested in sightseeing can visit the archaeological museum on the island, which displays some finds from the necropolis, take a trip across to the uninhabited island of Delos, an important World Heritage archaeological site, or explore the temples and the Avenue of the Lions.

Accommodation in Mykonos

Mykonos offers a range of accommodation options including private holiday homes, villas, cottages and apartments set against a fantastic landscape, looking out over the Aegean Sea and near the vibrant town of Mykonos. These private homes are aesthetically furnished and decorated for a true Greek experience. They are also well equipped with all modern amenities for a comfortable and memorable stay on the island.

Attractions

  • Aegean Maritime Museum: The museum features rare engravings, models of pre-Minoan ships, maps, navigational instruments. and rare coins. The ship 'Thalis o Milesios', built in 1909 and stationed at the Hellenic Navy's Museum wharf at the Paleo Phaliro marina is also worth a visit.
  • Delos: The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the island of Delos is a must visit for all those who love Greek mythology. It is believed that Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. His sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece and the island was also a prosperous trading port. Delos bears traces of the succeeding civilizations in the Aegean world, from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the palaeochristian era.
  • Mykonos Windmills: The 16 white-walled thatched-roofed windmills are Mykonos trademark attractions and are best viewed towards sunset from the town of Hora and also from the harbour.

Wining & Dining

Mykonos boasts some of the best restaurants in Cyclades. Visitors can enjoy great food in fine dining settings, taverns and family restaurants. Whether you are dining under the stars, next to a beach or in a stunning garden restaurant you will be guaranteed gastronomical delights complimented with first-rate service. Meals are usually accompanied by Greek ouzo or wines produced in Mykonos.

The cuisine is as varied as the settings in which the meals are served. You can take your pick from Greek and Italian, Chinese, Argentinean and many others. Dining in Mykonos will cost you a bit extra, however, the experience will be well worth it.

Nightlife

Mykonos is known as the party playground of Europe and is famed for its nightlife. The island is home to some of the most exciting bars and clubs it the Mediterranean region. Given that it is a gay destination, gay clubs abound on the island. Some of the most exciting clubs can be found in Taxi Square. There is also a wide range of bars with live jazz bands, rock, house, DJs, theme nights and fantastic views along Paradise Beach.
